“Venice, The Carnival Regatta On The Grand Canal”
The Carnival Regatta was a race down the Grand Canal and back again, the Rialto Bridge can be seen in the distance. At the left is the old Republic building, later the Plasso Balbi, some figures are weraring the white mask bautas. On the far left is the Doge’s floating barge review stand. From many windows can be seen blankets and cloths bearing the colours of the
occupants’ favorite team. It was the largest of the annual regattas and a crowd of a hundred thousand cheered on the gondoliers.

Artistic liberties have been taken in this interpretation of an oil painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as “Canaletto”.
