The Doge's visit to San Rocco

“The Doge’s visit to San Rocco”

The drawing depicts the Doge’s annual visit to the Scuola and the church of San Rocco
(Saint Roch) on San Rocco’s feast day, August 16th. This church was built in honor of and in gratitude to Saint Rocco, delivering Venice from the plague which swept through Europe in 1575-1576. It was a tradition that for the Doge’s visit, various artists were allowed to present their works, which can be seen displayed. Garlands, which were symbols of plague protection, can be seen hanging.

Artistic liberties have been taken in this interpretation of an oil painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as “Canaletto”.
