“Piazza San Marco, Venice”
St. Mark’s Basilica on the left and the palace on the right are the main subjects of this view of the Piazza San Marco, looking towards the south-east. The lagoon can be seen in the far background. The piazza has always been a popular marketplace. Various vendors, shoppers and tourists are shown in the foreground. On the far bottom right is a pizza venor.
Artistic liberties have been taken in this interpretation of an oil painting by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as “Canaletto”.
