Artist Statement

The forces of movement, change, color and light as they are found in our environment, and the relationship of this outer world to our inner world of thoughts and emotions, have proven to be an endless source of inspiration for my work.  I like to play with the hazy line between these two worlds—our inner and outer “landscapes”, morphing them into one simplified expression of energy.  I often use the shape of a sphere to represent the element of a being or an idea… something with a sense of thought, ownership or consciousness, as opposed to the landscapes, which for me are all about emotion and fluidity.  Every blade of grass is like a heartstring, playing music of turbulent drama or peaceful harmony.   The reaction and movement of the sphere, or being, within this setting creates a dance of energy that I aim to orchestrate and capture.  Choices can be made.  Do we want to embrace the energy around us and move with it, or do we struggle and try to escape?  Or do we become so engrossed in our surroundings that we disappear from them completely?  I find that working in this way allows me the opportunity to distill a moment into something of greater authenticity and timelessness.   My paintings have become a series of narratives on this level, however it is always my goal to create work that can easily be read and felt in spite of that.
